This Is Why You Should Be Using Lightroom Mobile & Web (Oct 2024 Adobe MAX Update)
Adobe’s October 2024 Lightroom updates came packed with improvements across the Lightroom Cloud ecosystem. In my previous article, I covered the new features on Lightroom Desktop; here, I’ll take you through the latest tools and updates for Lightroom Mobile and Lightroom Web.
1. Swipe Navigation in Lightroom Mobile
Let’s start with a small but handy update for Lightroom Mobile. When viewing images in the “Device” section (your camera roll browser), you can now swipe left or right to move between photos. It’s one of those small “quality of life” updates that make browsing through your photos feel smoother.
2. Quick Actions: Streamlining Edits with One-Tap Controls
Quick Actions is a game-changer, especially for those who want quick, powerful edits without getting bogged down by complex tools. The “magic wand” icon at the bottom left reveals context-specific editing suggestions, helping you get impressive results with minimal effort. Here’s how it works:
- Automatic Edits: Tap “Auto” to quickly adjust the color and tone. If you’re not satisfied, tap it again to revert.
- Contextual Suggestions: Lightroom now identifies elements like subjects, backgrounds, and skies, offering tools tailored to each. If it detects a person, for example, you’ll see retouching tools specific to portrait editing.
With Quick Actions, even new users can achieve stunning results using advanced techniques like masking. Quick Actions can brighten the subject, adjust the background, and apply retouching effects — all within a few taps.
3. Enhanced Generative Remove for Object Removal
In this update, the Generative Remove tool has become more intuitive. Rather than requiring a precise selection, you can now make a rough swipe over an area, and Lightroom will detect and remove objects intelligently. It’s perfect for cleaning up distractions in photos, such as unwanted people or objects.
4. Content Credentials for Transparency
As AI-driven editing becomes more prevalent, transparency is essential. Lightroom now allows you to add “Content Credentials” on export. This feature is like a nutrition label for images, recording the edits and enhancements made. Content Credentials also store information about who created the image and can link to your social media profiles. You can access this by toggling it on in the export settings.
This feature is great for maintaining trust and clarity around your creative process. For those interested in more details, Adobe’s Content Credentials website even lets you inspect images to see whether and how generative AI was used.
5. Lightroom Web’s Quick Actions and Recommended Presets
Lightroom Web users can now also enjoy Quick Actions, providing tailored edit suggestions based on image content. Additionally, there’s a handy straightening tool for correcting perspective issues. The Web version has another nice addition: recommended presets powered by the Lightroom community, available to all paying Lightroom subscribers.
These Quick Actions make adjustments based on detected image elements. For example, if the Web app recognizes a sky, you can apply effects like “blue drama” for a punchy boost. You can even add background blur using the Lens Blur tool to create more focus on your subject. Like on mobile, you can embed Content Credentials on export, giving your edits a transparent audit trail.
