Adobe has just released Lightroom Desktop 8.2 for Mac and Windows, bringing a host of improvements, bug fixes, and powerful new features. If you're a photography enthusiast looking to refine your editing workflow, this update is packed with tools designed to enhance your creative process. Let’s dive into three key features that stand out in this release.
Adaptive Profiles: AI-Powered Enhancements
One of the most exciting additions in Lightroom Desktop 8.2 is Adaptive Profiles, a feature that was initially introduced in Adobe Camera Raw. These AI-driven profiles intelligently analyze your image and apply adjustments tailored to its unique characteristics, making edits feel more natural and nuanced.
Unlike the Auto button, which applies global adjustments and modifies slider settings, Adaptive Profiles work without altering any sliders. Instead, they analyze elements like the subject, sky, and foreground to make intelligent, context-aware enhancements.
Two key profiles are available:
-
Adaptive Color: Enhances colors selectively based on image content.
-
Adaptive Black & White: Converts images to black and white while maintaining a balanced tonal range.
Since these profiles use AI, they may require updates when making additional edits, such as using the Generative Remove tool. Additionally, they are currently limited to RAW and DNG files, meaning they won’t be available for JPEG, TIFF, or PNG images.
For those who edit in HDR, these Adaptive Profiles are particularly effective, enhancing color depth and detail in ways that standard adjustments might not achieve.
Dual Monitor Support: A More Engaging Workflow
For photographers accustomed to Lightroom Classic, one missing feature in Lightroom Desktop was dual monitor support. That changes with version 8.2, allowing users to leverage multiple screens for an improved editing experience.
When Lightroom detects a second monitor, a new dual-monitor icon appears, providing options for how to display content on the secondary display:
-
Photo Grid: Displays an organized collection of images.
-
Square Grid: A denser layout for viewing more thumbnails.
-
Detail View: Shows a single image in full detail.
Additionally, the secondary display can be customized with an adjustable toolbar, and users can switch between grid and detail views dynamically. One creative way to use this feature is for before-and-after comparisons—locking the original image on one display while making edits on the other.
Before & After Compare Mode: A Long-Awaited Feature
Another long-missed feature from Lightroom Classic now available in Lightroom Desktop is Before & After Compare Mode. This tool allows users to compare an original unedited photo side-by-side with its current edit, providing a clear visual reference for adjustments.
The Compare Mode offers:
-
Side-by-Side or Top-Bottom Comparisons: Choose the layout that works best for your workflow.
-
Swap Orientation: Easily switch the before and after positions.
-
Filmstrip Navigation: Scroll through multiple images to compare edits efficiently.
For photographers who rely on visual feedback during editing, this feature is a game-changer, making it easier to evaluate changes and fine-tune adjustments.
