Ready Player One: I am SO Excited For This Movie!

To start, this post has nothing to do with photography. Rather, it fits in more with a goal that I’m working on to share more well-rounded stuff about me and my interests outside of photo and video. I’ll be peppering in these types of posts more often and I hope you enjoy them! Let me know in the comments.

As a card-carrying member of Generation X, virtually all of my childhood memories are made up of pop culture references from the 1980s and early 90s. While I wasn’t the most outgoing kid, I was obsessed with the comic books, cartoons, video games, music, and movies from that time. I still stand by the fact that my sense of right and wrong came directly from Optimus Prime of the Transformers.

With that context established, you could imagine that one of my favorite books of all time is titled Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. If you’re a fellow Gen-X’er who also cherishes the pop culture from the 80s and 90s and enjoys dystopian sci-fi , I cannot recommend this book enough. In fact, I recommend forgoing the actual book and go straight to the audiobook, wonderfully narrated by the great Wil Wheaton. I won’t go into too much detail about the story, but suffice it to say that there is a staggering number of references to 80s pop culture and the way that the author weaves it all into a cohesive story is legendary.

You might be wondering why I am even bringing this story up? Well, about a year ago, I read that none other than Steven Spielberg had signed up to direct a movie adaptation of Ready Player One. If there is any director capable of adapting Ernest Cline’s book into a cinematic thriller, it’s Spielberg. However, since that news broke, there have been tiny drips and drabs about the film. There were a few stealthy photos from the set shared but aside from that, it was pretty tight-lipped. Until yesterday! With Comic-Con San Diego in full effect, it was the perfect time to drop an update. Fortunately, my hunch was on the money and a teaser was released. Behold…

Shudder.

My good bud, Rick Malambri, did a nice job of listing out some of the more notable “blink or you’ll miss it” cameos. If you’re like me, you’re going to be watching this teaser a bunch of times to look for each.

The film is currently slated to release at the end of March 2018. I prefer not wishing my life away but I seriously cannot wait to see this movie. While I’m wide-eyed and optimistic, I will admit that some of the scenes in this teaser deviate quite dramatically from the book but I am reminded that this is an adaption after all and if anyone is going to helm it, let it be Spielberg.

Let me know in the comments if you’re as excited as I am for this movie and what you thought of the book. I cannot wait for this one!!

I am too excited about Blade runner 2 in October but once that’s out all my movie focus will be on ready player one, it’s an amazing book I couldn’t put it down it’s been a while since I have had such a page turned of a book as this.

Good luck with the new venture I look forward to future insights from you.

    Regards Chris
