The great waterfall primer

Latourell Falls, found within the Columbia River Gorge, is one of the best waterfalls to visit when you’re first entering the foray of this particular type of photography. There is a newly paved parking lot, the falls offers two easy-to-access vantage points via paved trails, and getting down to the surface doesn’t require much effort at all. It is the first waterfall stop along the famed circuit along Oregon’s famed Columbia River Gorge Historic Byway (Hwy 30).

Despite visiting these falls many times, there is never any shortage of photos to create, thanks to the constantly changing weather and constantly changing focal lengths. :) If you ever have a chance to visit this beautiful area, do not miss Latourell Falls.

I took this photo recently when Scott Kelby and Brad Moore visited Nicole and me. Scott needed a good waterfall shot and Latourell immediately became my #1 choice (partly due to the fact that the Multnomah Falls bridge was canopied and under construction after a boulder damaged part of it). I had my Sony A7 perched atop my Really Right Stuff TVC-34L sticks. The weather was pretty overcast but I still needed my Formatt-Hitech 3-stop ND filter to get the shutter speed up to about 1.5″. Stylization was done in Analog Efex Pro 2, part of theNik Collection by Google.
