When you least expect it

When I was in Tampa last week to announce the new Analog Efex Pro 2 (which was used to edit this image), part of the Nik Collection by Google, I had the opportunity to photograph a sunset that definitely goes down in my record books. It was a dizzying array of colors, shapes, and textures with a bit of heavy lightning mixed in.

Initially, when Matt Kloskowski invited me to go shoot at this beach, we both thought that the sunset would be a bust. From where we were, all signs were pointing to a bust. We went through the typical motions of considering abandoning the plans to photograph and go grab some beers and dinner. Ultimately, and thankfully, we made the right call and went to this beach. It really was one of those sunsets that just come out of nowhere and form right in front of your eyes.

Yeah, that's the thing with sunsets: completely unpredictable. The processing gives it a very "storybook" look, if that makes sense. Was this shot with your new ND set?

We do have the best sunsets here. Glad it turned into one of the really special ones for you. Never abandon a sunset at the beach, Brian (Matt should know that by now). Sometimes, when it looks like it will be spectacular, it completely fizzles out. And sometimes, when it looks like it'll be blah, it gets gorgeous at the last minute. You just never can tell.

Yes indeed. NEVER abandon a sunset at the beach… but it is, on occasion, okay to abandon a +Brian Matiash there if needed :-)

Well, of course it is, +Matt Kloskowski. And if the choice is the beach or a beer, just stop and pick up a beer on the way to the beach (or just wander over to the bean bar once the sun has gone down). :)
