Coast On The Brain

Coast On The Brain

I’m seriously jonesin’ to head back to the Oregon coast as soon as possible. I took this shot of Twin Rocks at Rockaway Beach in January of 2012 and I’ve only returned a handful of times. I have no good reason why but I know enough that 2013 will change all that. In the meantime, I’m finding myself working more and more on images from these locations – I think it’s because they bring my mind to a really calm and tranquil place. New house, new puppy and a new life altogether can do lots to give the feeling of stress (all good stress, mind you), so it’s nice to escape through image editing and nostalgia. :)

In terms of processing

I went very heavy with the vignetting here to bring focus to the driftwood in the foreground and with the intention of drawing the eye through the frame towards Twin Rocks. The colors were gorgeous while we were standing there and I accentuated them with Magic Sunset, Angel Glow, and a custom Tone Enhancer in Perfect Effects 4 by onOne Software.

Final touches were applied in Lightroom 4.3.

Nice shot, I like how I can see the Twin Rocks in the distance rather than how people typically show them all alone. Did you know there is a photowalk in Corvallis next Saturday (the 19th.) Don't know if you've ever been there but I can send you the details if you'd like.

+Tawni Henlin Bummer, I wasn't aware of the photowalk! It's all as well, I'm going to be in Death Valley so I wouldn't be able to make it anyway – next time though!

We should venture to the coast together sometime. I can show you my favorite spots.

+Mason Marsh Sounds like a plan. January is already tight with Death Valley and a return visit back home to New York City. Perhaps early Feb? Maybe a small get together of some hooligans looking to shoot a few [hundred] frames.

There is no better feeling than getting out in Nature and photograph anything. Just being out in the fresh air it just gets you mind off all the bad stuff.

Don't know how well you know the coast, but there ace a ton of cool spots. My mom lives in Lincoln city, so we get down there a lot. The one most people of is Boiler Bay. Cool spot and at low tide you can see the smoke stack from an old steam ship (hence boiler bay). There is a cool little place called Fogehrty Creek campground that has some interesting rocks and quite often seals or sea lions. Devils punch bowl is another. Newport is great for many reason. The bridge and harbor are Great places for scenics. There is a lighthouse. What photographer can resist a lighthouse? And the historic downtown is full of the vintage tin (read old and rusty) gritty, urban stuff you have such a good eye for. I wish I were closer so I could go more often. Have fun. I will have to let you know when I am going next, maybe we could work in a photo walk/drive and I can show you some cool stuff.

I love the pic. It makes me think that there can be peace in the world if people just saw the beauty in it.
