This has been the longest stretch that I’ve gone without returning home to New York City. It hasn’t been that bad as I’ve truly fallen in love with the gem that is Portland. Still, I am so excited to get back home for a few days to see my family and catch up with friends. I’m toying with getting a photowalk going. I’ll drop details on that in a few days.
This is an image of the iconic Empire Diner, which had sadly closed back in 2010 (the same year that I took this image). However, it has since re-opened as The Highliner. and it underscores the idea of taking the old and making new with my upcoming Redux series, where I take old images and re-process them from scratch to illustrate how time impacts individual style. I’m really excited to get that project off the ground (should be another few weeks or so). I was able to achieve this particular plane of focus and blur by using my Canon 17mm tilt shift lens. This was smack dab in the middle of a time when I tilted my lens for every shot I took. It is something that I greatly regret to this day. I’ll go into more detail in the Redux series.
